The wait is finally over. After the khuti puja set the wheels in motion back in June, South Kolkata's most eagerly watched Durga Puja has now officially lifted the curtain on its 2026 theme — and it is, by any measure, one of the boldest theme choices of this Puja season.
Santoshpur Lakepally Durgotsav (SLP) has announced that this year's theme is "তান্ডব — TANDAV", conceived and brought to life by the celebrated artist Rintu Das, under the presidency of Arunabh Majumdar. The grand reveal took place on 5th September 2026, where committee members, collaborators, and the creative team gathered together to formally mark the official start of pandal construction with a clapperboard ceremony — a uniquely cinematic touch that perfectly mirrors the theatrical scale of what Rintu Das is known to deliver.

What Is Tandav — And Why Is This Theme So Powerful?
Tandava is the divine dance performed by Lord Shiva — a dance that refers both to Shiva's own movement and the cosmic cycle of creation, preservation, and dissolution that it represents. The style is characterized by vigorous, brisk movements — raw, thunderous energy made visible.
In his most iconic form as Nataraja, the Lord of the Dance, Shiva dances within a flaming halo — the prabha mandala — which represents Time itself, shown as a perfect circle to symbolize the Hindu belief that time is cyclical and without end. The cosmic dance both creates and destroys the universe, its energy and wildness expressed in his bent knees and the extravagant, wild spread of his hair.
But here's what makes this theme even more layered when seen through the lens of Durga Puja specifically: Durga is Parvati, and Parvati is Shiva's consort. When Shiva dances the Tandav, he dances in a universe where Shakti — divine feminine energy, the very force that Durga embodies — exists alongside him as his equal and complement. Welcoming Maa Durga into a pandal themed around Tandav is therefore not a contrast; it is a cosmic reunion.
