A marigold-and-tuberose garland, easily twenty feet long, was strung along the length of the front row of chairs, ready for guests who would arrive through the day to pay their respects.

By the time the ritual reached its peak, the khuti itself was standing — a single tall bamboo pole, wrapped edge to edge in a spiralling garland of yellow marigold and deep maroon flowers, rising straight up against a clear August sky. At its base, the committee had laid out everything the ritual calls for: a brass lamp, a coconut, seasonal fruit, a mound of uncooked rice, and beds of loose flowers arranged in careful blocks of white, yellow, and red. It's a simple visual, but a powerful one — a bare bamboo pole, dressed and worshipped like a deity in its own right, because for one morning, that's exactly what it is.

What the New Backdrop Reveals

Both backdrop panels are covered edge to edge in a repeating red-and-white checkerboard carrying the words শারদোৎসব ২০২৬ — "Sharadotsab 2026" — alongside the committee's own Kashi Bose Lane emblem and a "৮৯ তম বর্ষ" mark confirming this as the 89th year. Set apart in the centre of each panel is a second tag: সৃষ্টি পুজো, roughly "the puja of creation" — a fitting phrase for a ceremony that's less about celebration and more about beginning, the very first ritual mark on a season that will only get louder from here.

Whether সৃষ্টি carries forward as part of this year's full pandal theme, or was chosen specifically to frame today's khuti and kathamo rituals, is something we'll confirm once the committee shares more. Either way, it sets a clear tone: this year's Durga, whatever she ends up looking like on the pandal floor, begins her story here, at creation.

A Quiet Callback in the Background

Look just past the backdrop panels in both photos and you'll spot old wall art still standing on the buildings behind the park — including a fragment reading আর কোনখানে... লীলা মজুমদার, a leftover trace of Kashi Bose Lane's own 88th-year theme, "Pakdandi," which paid tribute to author Leela Majumdar in 2025. It's a small detail, easy to miss in a photo taken for an entirely different ceremony, but it's a nice reminder of how these neighbourhood puja grounds carry memory year over year — last season's artwork still watching over this season's first ritual.

What Comes Next for Kashi Bose Lane

With the khuti puja and kathamo puja both completed, the ground at Kashi Bose Lane KIT Park is now formally sanctified for this year's build. Expect the pace to pick up quickly from here — bamboo scaffolding deliveries, the pandal's structural skeleton rising section by section, and, if past years are anything to go by, an official theme and art-director announcement landing well before Mahalaya. The Chappanna Bhog preparations that Kashi Bose Lane is famous for on Nabami are still weeks away, but today's ritual is what sets that entire calendar in motion.
