Subal Smriti Sangha Durga Puja 2026 — Khuti Pujo Announced! Maa Durga's Countdown Begins in Kadamtala, Howrah

There is a feeling that every Bengali knows.

It does not arrive with a calendar reminder. It does not come with a formal announcement. It just settles into your chest one day — quiet, warm, and unmistakable.

Maa aschhen.

And in 2026, one of Howrah's most beloved community pujas made it official first.

On 31st May, 2026, Subal Smriti Sangha announced their Khuti Pujo — the sacred ritual that marks the very beginning of Durga Puja preparations. And the Khuti Pujo itself? It was held the very next evening — 16th July, 2026 (Thursday), at 6:00 PM.

Just like that, the season began.

What Exactly Is Khuti Pujo — And Why Is It So Special?

If you are someone who follows Durga Puja closely, you already feel it in your gut. But for those who are learning about the traditions for the first time, here is what Khuti Pujo really means.

The word "Khuti" means a post or pillar. Before a single bamboo pole is raised, before the theme is revealed, before the lights are ordered and the idol leaves the sculptor's workshop — the ground is consecrated.

A sacred post is planted into the earth. Prayers are offered. Permission is sought — from the gods, from the neighbourhood, from the universe itself — to begin the celebration of Maa Durga.

It is a deeply human ritual. It says: "We are ready. We are committed. And we are doing this together."

For the local community, the Khuti Pujo is also the first public moment of the year. It is when the committee steps forward and says — our Puja is happening. Mark your calendars. Maa is coming.

The Announcement That Lit Up Howrah — 31st May, 2026

On 31st May, 2026, Subal Smriti Sangha released their Khuti Pujo announcement — and it immediately caught the attention of Puja lovers across Howrah and beyond.

The announcement was timed with beautiful intention. It came right at the cusp of Rath Yatra season — a moment that Bengalis have always associated with Maa Durga's approaching arrival.

There is an old saying that captures this perfectly: "রথ দেখলে দুর্গা আসে" — "When the Rath passes, Durga comes."

The announcement poster carried the same spirit — "শুরু হলো মায়ের আগমনীর শুভ রথযাত্রার পুণ্য লগ্নে" — meaning the auspicious beginning of Maa's arrival, timed with the holy occasion of Rath Yatra.

That is not just a tagline. That is poetry. That is Bengal.

The Khuti Pujo — 16th July, 2026, Thursday Evening

With the announcement made on 15th July, all eyes turned to the next evening.

Date: 16th July, 2026

Day: Bṛhaspatibar — Thursday

Time: Sandhya 6:00 PM (Evening 6 o'clock)

Venue: 174, Belilious Road, Kadamtala, Howrah - 1

As the evening set in over Kadamtala on that Thursday, the neighbourhood gathered. The priests chanted. The sacred post was planted. And in that one quiet, powerful moment — Subal Smriti Sangha's 46th Durga Puja officially began.

Who Is Subal Smriti Sangha?

Located at 174, Belilious Road, Kadamtala, Howrah - 1, Subal Smriti Sangha is a true Sarbojonin (community-for-all) Durga Puja committee with deep roots in its neighbourhood.

Sarbojonin — the word itself says everything. It means "belonging to all." No barriers of wealth, caste, or background. Just an entire neighbourhood coming together under one roof, in front of one Mother.

This year is their 82nd edition. Eighty-Two years of Khuti Pujos. Eighty-Two years of Maa Durga arriving at Belilious Road. Eighty-Two years of a promise kept.

That kind of longevity does not come from money or glamour. It comes from something much simpler and much more powerful — a community that genuinely loves its festival, and the Mother at the heart of it.

Why the Rath Yatra–Durga Puja Connection Runs So Deep

Many people sense this connection instinctively but have never heard it explained. So let us talk about it.

Rath Yatra typically falls in Ashadh (June–July). Durga Puja falls in Ashwin (September–October). That gap is roughly three months — which is precisely the time a Puja committee needs to go from zero to fully ready.

After Rath Yatra, committees begin:

  • Confirming their theme and pandal artist
  • Placing orders with idol sculptors in Kumartuli
  • Finalising sponsors and community funds
  • Performing Khuti Pujo to consecrate the ground

So when Subal Smriti Sangha announced their Khuti Pujo on 15th July — right in the Rath Yatra window — it was perfectly, beautifully timed.

The chariot rolled. And Maa began her journey home.

Kadamtala, Howrah — A Neighbourhood That Lives Its Puja

Kadamtala is one of those old Howrah neighbourhoods where community life is still very real. No glass towers or flyovers cutting through the spirit of the place. Just streets that know each other, families that have celebrated together for generations, and a Puja that belongs to everyone.

Howrah is often called Kolkata's twin city — separated by the Hooghly River, connected by the iconic Howrah Bridge. But Howrah has its own distinct Puja culture. Less flashy than some of the South Kolkata marquee pujas, but no less heartfelt. Often more so.

The pujas here are neighbourhood pujas in the truest sense. The committee members are your neighbours. The food stalls are run by the same uncle every year. And when you stand in front of Maa's idol, you feel like she has come home to your house.

That is Subal Smriti Sangha's puja at Belilious Road.

82 Years — What That Really Means

Stop for a moment and think about this.

82 years. This puja began around 1980–1981 — before smartphones, before Instagram pandal tours, before celebrity-designed idols and LED mapping shows.

Back then, a group of people in Kadamtala decided: "We will celebrate Maa Durga together. Every year. Without fail."

And they have.

Through floods and elections. Through tight budgets and difficult years. Through a world that kept changing around them — they kept their word to the Mother.

82 Khuti Pujos. 82 times Maa arrived at Belilious Road. 82 years of the neighbourhood coming alive.

That is not just a number. That is a legacy.

A Note to Every Durga Puja Lover

Whether you are from Howrah, Kolkata, or anywhere in the world — Subal Smriti Sangha's Khuti Pujo is a reminder of something simple and true.

Durga Puja does not begin in October. It begins in the heart.

It begins the day someone says: "এবার পুজো হবে।" — "This year, the Puja will happen."

It will begin on the evening of 15th July, when Subal Smriti Sangha made their announcement.

It will be sealed on 16th July, when the Khuti went into the ground at Kadamtala, Howrah.

And now, the countdown is on.

আর মাত্র কয়েকটি দিন। মা আসছেন।
